Sobeys is the second largest grocery retailer in Canada, headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. It is a subsidiary of the Empire Company Limited conglomerate.
At the very beginning, Sobeys was a small meat-delivery business, founded in 1907. Only later did J. W. Sobey, the founder, expand into a full grocery business, and the first self-serve supermarket opened its doors in 1949. At the moment, the company comprises over 1,500 stores – both corporate and franchise ones – located in all ten provinces of Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Sobeys is an employer of more than 123,000 people.
In addition to the core Sobeys banner, its stores are operated under a variety of other retail banners, including Safeway, Price Chopper, Foodland, IGA / IGA Extra, Lawtons Drugs and more.
