Giant Tiger is an exclusively Canadian discount store chain, headquartered in Ottawa, which currently comprises more than 250 stores in all provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan). The company employs over 8,000 people.
The first company-owned Giant Tiger store opened its doors in 1961 in Byward Market in Ottawa. However, a major turn in the company’s strategy came in 1968, when first franchised Giant Tiger was opened. Franchise stores currently account for the vast majority of its locations, and this scheme is to be thanked for the success the company has been experiencing ever since. The company operates stores under the banners of Giant Tiger, GTXpress, Scott’s Discount, and Tigre Géant.
